Why consider a bathroom adaptation?
Difficulty entering the bath, reaching controls, standing to wash or moving around fittings can make an existing bathroom less usable. The home survey considers which changes may help and which fittings can remain.
Options include low-threshold or level-access showers, wet rooms, rails, seats and accessible sanitaryware. Suitability depends on the person, the room, drainage and fixings; no single layout suits every disability.

Bring any OT recommendation or council quotation requirements to the survey. BAL can prepare an itemised installation scope against them. Our practical survey does not replace an OT assessment or determine funding eligibility.
Private work, funding and VAT
An owner can ask BAL to survey and quote for privately commissioned work separately from a council funding application. The scope must still suit the person and property, and any required permissions must be checked. A tenant should contact their landlord and obtain the necessary written consent before commissioning alterations. If you want grant help, obtain the funder's written approval before work starts rather than assume privately arranged work will be reimbursed. BAL's practical survey is not an OT assessment or a funding decision.
VAT relief and council funding are separate decisions. Qualifying disability-related bathroom work in a disabled or chronically sick person's private residence can be zero-rated; a general refurbishment does not qualify simply because it includes a shower. Certain installed mobility aids for people aged 60 or over may qualify for 5% VAT under separate rules. The applicable rate and any eligibility declaration should be confirmed in the written quotation.

Can I retain my existing shower when adapting or refurbishing the bathroom?
Possibly, if its access, condition, controls and layout still suit the user and it is compatible with the proposed plumbing, floor and waterproofing work. Discuss retained fittings at the survey; changes around a shower may affect its seals and waterproofing.
Can the work allow for possible future needs?
Consider reachable controls, space for seating and suitable wall backing where rails are planned. Future adaptation options depend on the room, floor construction and drainage. Backing or a planned layout does not guarantee that level access can be added later.
What should an itemised bathroom quotation include?
Ask for the agreed fittings and finishes, retained items, removal, plumbing and drainage, electrical work, waterproofing and making good to be identified where relevant. Check exclusions and assumptions, and how changes to the scope and price will be agreed. This is a scope checklist, not a statement that every item is included in every job.

What is involved in adapting a bathroom for a disabled person?
The starting point is how the person actually uses the room: how they get in, whether they stand, sit or transfer, which side they lead with, and whether a carer is involved. From that comes the layout — usually a level-access or low-threshold shower, grab rails fixed into solid backing on the sides that are actually reached for, a fold-down or free-standing seat, slip-resistant flooring, a comfort-height WC, lever taps and a thermostatic anti-scald valve.
Can the bathroom still look like a normal bathroom?
Yes, and we design it that way as standard. Modern rails, screens, seats and flooring can be specified so the room reads as a well-finished bathroom rather than a clinical one, while still doing the safety job properly.

How long does the work take?
The schedule depends on the bathroom — the layout, the floor construction, whether the waste has to move, and the finish you choose. Rather than quote a generic number of days, we confirm the start date and the working schedule in writing in your quotation, after the survey, so you know exactly what to plan around.
Do I have to go through the council, or can I pay privately?
You can arrange and pay for the work with us directly. Council help in Scotland runs through each council's Scheme of Assistance and follows an assessment of need; eligibility, the level of any grant and the process vary by council and by whether you own or rent. If a council grant is involved, we can provide the quotation in the format your council asks for. VAT depends on your circumstances and we confirm the applicable rate in the quotation.

How much will the council pay?▾
It varies. Eligibility, the level of grant and the process differ by council and by tenure, and an assessment of need is generally involved. South Lanarkshire Council currently states that eligible disabled adaptations follow an occupational therapy assessment and that mandatory grant is normally 80%, with 100% in some cases; other councils set this out differently, so check your own council's scheme.
Can you fit a single grab rail rather than a full bathroom?▾
Yes. BAL fits standalone rails and other smaller adaptations. The survey checks the proposed position, backing and making good, then the agreed work is quoted in writing.
