Bathroom Adaptation Grants — Fife Council

For qualifying mandatory adaptation grants in Scottish private-sector housing, the statutory minimum is 80% of the council-approved eligible expense, or 100% where the prescribed benefit conditions apply. This is not 80% or 100% of every bathroom quotation: the council must assess need, eligibility, eligible work and approved expense. General refurbishment, chosen upgrades and excluded work are not automatically covered. Council and housing-association tenants use their landlord's adaptation route rather than assume this private-sector grant calculation applies.

Not every straightforward adaptation needs the same assessment route. The final Scottish Government guidance, published 17 January 2023, recommends maximising direct access to standardised solutions where needs are straightforward and non-complex. Its housing chapter and key actions specifically discuss standard shower adaptations in local-authority and housing-association homes. This is guidance for service pathways, not automatic permission, a funding award or a guarantee that a local direct-access route is available. Ask your council or landlord which assessment route applies; complex needs may require an OT or another specialist.

An owner can ask BAL to survey and quote for privately commissioned work separately from a council funding application. The scope must still suit the person and property, and any required permissions must be checked. A tenant should contact their landlord and obtain the necessary written consent before commissioning alterations. If you want grant help, obtain the funder's written approval before work starts rather than assume privately arranged work will be reimbursed. BAL's practical survey is not an OT assessment or a funding decision. For funded work, confirm contractor and quotation requirements with the council or landlord before appointing anyone.

Ask the council or landlord about its current assessment and decision process. BAL agrees the installation schedule for the actual bathroom scope after the necessary approvals; no standard wait or installation time is promised.

Request a separate price for chosen extras. A mandatory adaptation grant relates to approved eligible expense, not automatically a general refurbishment or every fitting you choose. Ask the funder which work is included.
