Why consider a private adaptation?
Privately commissioned work lets you discuss the scope directly with BAL, whether you need a targeted access improvement or a full room refresh. Dates depend on the agreed work and availability; going private does not guarantee an immediate start.
An owner can ask BAL to survey and quote for privately commissioned work separately from a council funding application. The scope must still suit the person and property, and any required permissions must be checked. A tenant should contact their landlord and obtain the necessary written consent before commissioning alterations. If you want grant help, obtain the funder's written approval before work starts rather than assume privately arranged work will be reimbursed. BAL's practical survey is not an OT assessment or a funding decision.
Choose what changes and what stays
Discuss the shower entry, rails, seating, WC and basin alongside wall finishes, flooring and lighting. Retained fittings and any wider refurbishment are assessed for compatibility and included in the agreed scope.
VAT relief and council funding are separate decisions. Qualifying disability-related bathroom work in a disabled or chronically sick person's private residence can be zero-rated; a general refurbishment does not qualify simply because it includes a shower. Certain installed mobility aids for people aged 60 or over may qualify for 5% VAT under separate rules. The applicable rate and any eligibility declaration should be confirmed in the written quotation.

- 2. We arrange a home survey. We check access needs, room layout, floor, drainage and wall fixings before recommending an option.
- 3. Review your written quotation. You receive a written quotation setting out the agreed scope, so you can decide in your own time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I arrange a private bathroom adaptation instead of waiting for a council adaptation?▾
Yes. You can arrange and pay for the work with us directly instead of going through a council-funded adaptation process. You keep control of the specification, and start dates are agreed with you and confirmed in the written quotation and schedule.
Is private work more expensive than a council adaptation?▾
Private work is paid for by the customer. Compare the agreed scope, eligible costs and any written funding decision rather than assume two routes cover the same work. Optional upgrades and full refurbishment are not automatically grant-funded. The survey establishes your scope, price and installation schedule.
Can I start privately and still apply for a grant later?▾
If you want grant help, obtain the funder’s written approval before work starts. Do not assume privately arranged work will be reimbursed. BAL’s survey and quotation do not determine grant eligibility or approval.
Do you cover Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as Lanarkshire?▾
Yes. Lanarkshire is our core patch from the Hamilton base, and we work across Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling, West Lothian, Fife and Edinburgh.
