We replace that bath with a shower they can walk into, add support exactly where it is needed, and finish the room so it still looks like a bathroom. The problem we are usually asked to solve
A standard UK bath has a rim around 550mm off the floor. Stepping over that on a wet surface, often while holding a slippery edge for balance, is the single most common reason older people stop washing independently. Strip washes at the sink follow, then a loss of confidence, then — often — a fall.
The fix is rarely complicated. Take the bath out, put in a shower with a low or level threshold, give the person something solid to hold and somewhere safe to sit, and make the floor grippy when wet. Everything else is detail.
Features we specify, and why
A low-level or level-access shower tray removes the step. A hinged or fold-down shower seat means the person can wash sitting down, which matters enormously if standing for five minutes is tiring. Grab rails go in at the entry point and beside the seat, fixed into timber noggins or a reinforced backing board rather than plasterboard plugs. A thermostatic mixer stops scalding. Slip-resistant safety vinyl replaces tiles on the floor. Lever taps and a raised or comfort-height WC often go in at the same time because it costs very little extra while the room is open.
We size and position all of it around the person who will be using it — reach, height, which side they lead with, whether a carer needs room to help.
Arranging the work privately
Council-funded adaptation routes in Scotland vary by council and by whether you own or rent your home, and an assessment of need is generally involved. Some households would rather not go through that process, and some fall outside it. You can simply arrange the work with us directly and pay for it yourself, choosing the specification and the timing.
If you do have an OT recommendation, bring it — we will quote against it line by line. Timings are confirmed in the written quotation and schedule.

We dust-sheet the route in, keep a working toilet available wherever possible, and clear up at the end of every day rather than at the end of the job. You then get a written, itemised quotation with the specification, the VAT position and the agreed schedule set out in it. Nothing is booked until you accept the quotation, and there is no obligation at any stage.
How long does the work take?
The schedule depends on the bathroom — the layout, the floor construction, whether the waste has to move, and the finish you choose. Rather than quote a generic number of days, we confirm the start date and the working schedule in writing in your quotation, after the survey, so you know exactly what to plan around.
Do I have to go through the council, or can I pay privately?
You can arrange and pay for the work with us directly. Council help in Scotland runs through each council's Scheme of Assistance and follows an assessment of need; eligibility, the level of any grant and the process vary by council and by whether you own or rent. If a council grant is involved, we can provide the quotation in the format your council asks for. VAT depends on your circumstances and we confirm the applicable rate in the quotation.
