Bathroom Adaptation Grants — Falkirk Council
Falkirk Council funds essential bathroom adaptations through its Scheme of Assistance. If you live in Falkirk, Grangemouth, Bonnybridge, Polmont or anywhere else in the district, this is how the process works and what we can do to help.
Grant funding at a glance
Falkirk Council administers adaptation help through Scotland's Scheme of Assistance. Eligibility, the level of any grant and the process depend on your circumstances and tenure, and an assessment of need is generally involved — confirm the current rules directly with the council.
Adaptations are arranged via Falkirk Council's Occupational Therapy service (Social Work). Self-referrals are accepted by calling Falkirk Council Social Work on 01324 506070.
How the Falkirk Council Scheme of Assistance process works
1. Request an Occupational Therapy assessment
Call Falkirk Council Social Work directly, or ask your GP to refer you. The OT will visit your home, assess how you use the bathroom and recommend what's needed.
2. Get a quote in the council's format
Once you have the OT specification, we'll provide a written quote that mirrors it line by line — exactly what Falkirk's grants officer needs to process the application.
3. Means test & grant approval
Falkirk Council assesses household income against the standard Scottish thresholds. You'll be notified in writing of the grant amount and any contribution due from you.
4. Install
Once approved we schedule the work — typically within a fortnight. Most jobs are on site for 3-7 days. We invoice the council direct for the grant portion.

Do I have to use a contractor Falkirk Council chooses?▾

What if I'm a homeowner versus a council/housing association tenant?▾
Homeowners and private tenants apply via the Scheme of Assistance. Falkirk Council and housing association tenants apply through their landlord, but the OT assessment process is the same.
Can I top up the grant for upgraded fittings?▾
Yes. The grant covers the essential adaptation; if you want premium tiling, a steam shower upgrade or similar, we'll quote the difference separately so you can decide.
